This article is part of our Creative Cards Resource Series. Each resource provider featured in this series shares their tips and words of wisdom, when it comes to creating printable, card-based products.
Jan, thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, regarding card-based products.
How did you come up with the idea for creating your product in a “Cards” format ?
I create what I’d like to see for my own use or I look to see what is selling on Etsy and in marketplaces such as Amazon.
What tips do you have for customers who want to print these out and use them, so they last for awhile without getting torn or wrinkled?
It’s good to print them on white card stock. If they wish, customers can laminate them too.
What types of things can people do to customize the editable templates and what program(s) can the files be edited in?
Customers can edit the files in Canva or Powerpoint. The words can be changed to use different quotes. Different fonts could be used. They could stylize the words into a word art type format using a group of different fonts. The backgrounds can be changed or different decorative elements added to the front of the cards. The back of the cards could be decorated to match whatever they choose for the front, using the same design elements or just mirroring the colors in a pattern.
Do you find that the cards are easy to cut out being that they are so close together on the page?
They are easier to cut out as there are fewer cutting lines when the cards share a border.
What advice can you offer to card creators when it comes to using quotes?
Just a general note of caution. When adding quotes, be careful about choosing quotes that are free for commercial use. Quotes that you see online, especially on social media, can’t always be sold as they are often subject to copyright. Even Bible quotes may not be free to use – some translations are subject to copyright. All of our cards currently on sale include quotes that are free to use. Readers of course may be wondering how to find quotes that do come with commercial use rights. Unfortunately this is a huge topic however, while there’s no quick answer this resource might help. https://bytescare.com/blog/how-to-check-copyright-quotes
I tend to use proverbs in general use, very old quotes at least a couple of hundred years old, or I write them myself.
