Fitting the Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces Together
When it comes to publishing a book – there are many pieces of the puzzle to put in place. My strongest piece of advise is for to focus on one piece at a time, as everything will fall into place.
The most important steps to take, as you get started are to:
Decide on the topic / theme of your coloring book. By doing this you will attract coloring book buyers who are interested in the topic area. This will also open up many marketing opportunities as you can market your coloring book, not only to coloring book enthusiasts, but to people who are interested in the topic of your coloring book.
For example, if you publish a coloring book about butterflies, you can then market it to butterfly farm gift shops, school classrooms, nature study locations and more.
Once you’ve decided on the topic/theme of your coloring book, you can begin to create your pages. You can do this digitally on the computer or iPad or by hand. If you create your drawings by hand, you’ll need to scan them into the computer as high-resolution images.
To help you with your page layout, decide on the dimensions of your book. For example, some common sizes for coloring books are 8.5×11 – 8×10 – 8.5×8.5 – or 5×8. Perhaps spend some time at the book store so you view various options and choose the one that resonates with you most. My nephew is coming to visit me next week. I want to get somethings that he can play with. I like your suggestion about finding themed coloring books that have high-resolution images. He loves pirates and outer space. So, it seems like I should look for books that are themed like that.
Do you have any recommendations on companies or distributors that authros can go through to self-publish their coloring book?
Hi Matthew – these days, publishing directly to Amazon via KDP Select is considered the way to go. The process is simple, the support is great, the quality is excellent, the payment and tracking systems are efficient and timely – and they outrank most other companies in each of these areas. Matthew I looked for you in our learning center and discussion forums but couldn’t find you. Are you in any of our author or course creation programs here? We have a great community of supportive authors and content creators.
